Autumn is one of the best times to spend a weekend in Podhale. The peak summer season is over, popular trails become quieter, and the forests and Tatra valleys begin to change colour.

It's also a time of year when you don't need to fill every day with long mountain hikes. A scenic walk, regional food, thermal baths and an evening in a hot tub can make for a much more relaxing weekend than trying to see everything at once.

If you have three days, here's our idea for an autumn weekend in Podhale, with Siwy Dzwonek in Ciche as your base.

Why Visit Podhale in Autumn?

September and October show a different side of Podhale.

The days become shorter and cooler, but the lower temperatures can make walking much more enjoyable than during the summer heat. Autumn colours transform the landscape, while outside the most popular locations it's easier to find some peace and quiet.

There's another advantage too: after a few hours outdoors, a hot tub, sauna or long evening at the chalet feels even better.

Day 1: Ciche, Chochołów and a Relaxing Evening

Arrive in Ciche

We wouldn't plan an ambitious mountain hike for your first day.

After travelling, it's much better to give yourself some time to unpack, relax and explore the immediate surroundings.

Siwy Dzwonek is located in Ciche, in western Podhale, making it a convenient base for discovering the Western Tatras and nearby attractions over the following days.

Take a Walk Through Chochołów

Chochołów is a great choice for your first afternoon.

The village is famous for its traditional wooden architecture. Exploring it doesn't require any special preparation or several hours of hiking, which makes it ideal for arrival day.

Take a relaxed walk among the traditional houses, discover some of the local architecture and finish with a regional lunch or dinner.

Spend the Evening in Your Private Hot Tub

Once you're back, there's no need to drive anywhere else.

Both Siwy Dzwonek 1 and Siwy Dzwonek 2 have their own private outdoor hot tubs.

As the evenings become cooler, relaxing in hot water feels completely different than it does in summer.

It's a simple way to slow down and start your weekend without rushing.

Day 2: Explore the Western Tatras

The second day is the perfect time to head into the mountains.

That doesn't mean you need to climb a summit.

Option 1: Chochołowska Valley

Chochołowska Valley is one of the most natural choices when staying in this part of Podhale.

You can adapt the route to your fitness level and the amount of time you have. There's no need to walk the entire valley – it can be a relaxed few-hour walk or a longer day out.

It's particularly suitable for travellers who want to experience the Tatras without planning a demanding high-mountain hike.

Option 2: Kościeliska Valley

Another option is Kościeliska Valley.

It's one of the best-known valleys in the Western Tatras, with forests, meadows, a mountain stream and distinctive limestone rock formations along the way.

In autumn, the changing colours of the forest make the scenery particularly beautiful.

Stop for a Regional Meal

After a few hours of walking, take your time over lunch.

Kwaśnica, moskole, pierogi and other regional dishes are as much a part of a trip to Podhale as the mountains themselves.

There's no need to rush straight into another attraction after leaving the trail. An autumn weekend should leave some room for doing less.

Evening: Sauna, Hot Tub or a Game of Pool

Once you're back at Siwy Dzwonek, it's time for the quieter part of the day.

At Siwy Dzwonek 1, you'll have access to both a private hot tub and a private sauna.

It's particularly enjoyable after spending several hours outdoors in cooler autumn weather.

Day 3: Chochołowskie Thermal Baths and an Easy Journey Home

We wouldn't plan a long mountain hike for your final day.

Instead of spending the entire walk wondering whether you'll make it back on time, use your last few hours for something more relaxing.

A Slow Morning in Podhale

If the weather is good, start with a short walk around the area or simply enjoy a long breakfast and your final morning at Siwy Dzwonek.

Not every day in the mountains needs to begin early.

Chochołowskie Thermal Baths

Chochołowskie Thermal Baths are a great way to finish the weekend.

Warm thermal pools work particularly well on cooler autumn days. They're also a useful alternative if the weather on your final day isn't suitable for walking.

Afterwards, stop for lunch before starting your journey home.

What If It Rains All Weekend?

Autumn weather in the mountains can be unpredictable.

That doesn't mean you need to cancel your trip.

Thermal baths, regional food, Chochołów and indoor attractions can replace a day on the trails. Choosing accommodation where you can comfortably spend a few hours without leaving also makes a big difference.

We've put together a separate guide for exactly this situation:

An Autumn Weekend in Podhale with Children

When travelling with children, the easiest improvement you can make to this itinerary is to do less.

On the first day, a walk around Chochołów may be more than enough.

On the second day, instead of planning a long hike, walk only part of Chochołowska or Kościeliska Valley and turn around when the children have had enough.

Finish the third day at the thermal baths.

There's also an outdoor playground at Siwy Dzwonek, so not every free hour needs to mean another trip in the car.

Three Days Are Enough to Slow Down

An autumn weekend in Podhale doesn't need to be packed with activities from morning until evening.

Explore the local area on your first day. Head into the Tatras on your second. Relax at the thermal baths on your third.

And somewhere between all of that, leave some time for a long breakfast, regional food, your private hot tub and simply doing nothing.

Sometimes those are the weekends you remember most.
